Retina Surgery for Premature Babies Mayo Clinic doctors work to prevent blindness in babies who are born prematurely. Premature babies (especially those under 32 weeks) are at great risk of retinal detachment. The problem happens because prematurely formed eyes develop scarring which can lead to warpage and then detachment. If detachment occurs, the baby will go blind. To prevent blindness, doctors screen premature babies. If these babies begin to develop scarring, they will perform laser surgery to stop detachment from progressing. The procedure prevents many children from going blind each year. Click here to see video of this story. For further information on ophthalmologic disease, treatment and services at Mayo Clinic go to:

New Treatment for Barrett's Esophagus Mayo Clinic doctors research new technology that may successfully treat Barrett's Esophagus. Barrett's Esophagus is a change in the cells of the lining of the esophagus that may be the result of years of chronic heartburn. The condition leads to cancer in one out of ten cases. Currently, there is no cure for this condition - only monitoring to be sure cancer does not develop. A new radio frequency ablation procedure burns away the Barrett's cells, leaving normal esophageal cells behind. The technology is being studied at several sites. Mayo Clinic Scottsdale was the first to perform the procedure. Click here to see video of this story. Nurses at Mayo Clinic's St. Mary's Hospital take steps to reduce noise levels in the hospital at night. These steps are the results of a study of noise levels that was prompted by months of patient comments. It turns out that, yes, it may be hard to get a good night's sleep in the hospital, but there are ways to reduce noise levels. Nurses took decibel readings which showed shift change was as loud as a jackhammer. Click here to see video of this story. For further information on services at Mayo Clinic go to:
